H0001072_Super Security Laughed Off By Cops Residents_part2 | Bopthe The Quintessential Drive: Unveiling the Champion Cars of 2025 The automotive landscape of 2025 is a vibrant tapestry, woven with innovation, tradition, and a healthy dose of passion. As the year draws to a close, the team at Autocar traditionally convenes for a festive gathering, a moment to reflect on the past twelve months of vehicular marvels. While a Secret Santa gift exchange has been a long-standing preamble, this year we’ve opted for a more direct approach, a spirited debate, if you will, centered around the cars that have truly defined the year for us. Each of us has brought forth a vehicle from the last year that we champion – be it for personal affection or for its sheer, undeniable brilliance in the industry. The formidable task of crowning a champion falls to our discerning road test editor, Sam Phillips, who will navigate the diverse opinions and crown the ultimate automotive star. This is a rare privilege, a chance to engage with the crème de la crème of the automotive world, to experience firsthand the cutting-edge technology and the enduring spirit of driving. While every day at Autocar offers glimpses into automotive excellence, this annual event is a particular highlight, a celebration of the machines that move us, inspire us, and frankly, make our jobs incredibly rewarding. With a year’s worth of groundbreaking engineering and design to draw from, let us embark on this journey of automotive revelation, beginning with a vehicle that has, against all odds, carved out a significant niche: the Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid. The Eco-Conscious Sentinel: Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid As it glides with an almost ethereal silence through the misty morning air blanketing the dramatic cliffs of Beachy Head, one might initially mistake the Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid for a sophisticated ride-sharing service. However, beneath its undeniably aerodynamic silhouette lies a vehicle that has evolved from a symbol of environmental consciousness to a genuine contender for automotive accolades. James Disdale, a contributor with a keen eye for technological advancement, eloquently articulates this sentiment: “If you had told me twenty years ago that I’d be nominating a Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid for this honor, I would have chuckled. Yet, looking back twenty-five years to its inception, the Prius was celebrated for delivering ingenious powertrain technology in an accessible package. And astonishingly, it continues to do so. Its ubiquitous presence as a taxi and ride-hailing vehicle is no accident; the Prius is renowned for its exceptional efficiency and unwavering reliability, making it a fundamentally brilliant car. In these uncertain economic times, championing a vehicle that embodies practical, everyday utility makes immense sense. As the importance of fuel efficiency and resource conservation intensifies, the advanced hybrid powertrain of the Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid only grows more relevant. And to those who still associate it solely with ride-sharing, I assure you, it is now a truly engaging drive.” His point is remarkably astute. A brief sojourn behind the wheel, weaving along the serpentine roads that hug the Sussex coast towards the iconic Beachy Head lighthouse, reveals a surprisingly satisfying driving experience. There’s an almost uncanny composure as the hybrid system seamlessly blends electric propulsion with its internal combustion engine, creating a fluid and refined motion. Disdale further elaborates, drawing parallels to automotive heritage: “The Prius possesses echoes of the best of Saab’s engineering, perhaps even a whisper of modern DS Automobiles’ avant-garde approach. It’s a testament to intelligent design.” This is more than just an eco-friendly appliance; it’s a thoughtfully engineered machine that offers a compelling blend of efficiency and driving pleasure, making the Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid a surprisingly strong contender for the year’s best. The Roaring Heartbeat: Ford Mustang Dark Horse While the prevailing economic climate might suggest a more conservative approach, road tester Illya Verpraet has certainly eschewed any notion of cost-of-living crisis austerity with his choice: the Ford Mustang Dark Horse. It arrives as a deliciously brooding presence, a stark contrast to the more subdued tones of many vehicles. Simply being in its vicinity ignites a childlike excitement, a visceral thrill that only a V8-powered muscle car can evoke. Its arrival is met with an almost involuntary surge of admiration, especially knowing it’s equipped with a manual gearbox. Verpraet explains his rationale: “The Mustang endured a bit of an unfair assessment at last year’s ‘Handling Day’ when presented in automatic guise. However, experiencing it with the manual transmission revealed its true character. It’s a wonderfully anachronistic machine. It may not boast hyper-sophistication, but its sheer fun factor is immense. I find myself utterly captivated by it, even if it does occasionally induce a touch of self-consciousness.” The guttural symphony emanating from the Dark Horse’s V8 is, in itself, enough to elevate the festive spirit. And speaking of sonorous V8 soundtracks, an unexpected but welcome addition to our gathering is editor-in-chief Steve Cropley’s chosen steed: the Porsche Panamera Turbo S. The Sophisticated Powerhouse: Porsche Panamera Turbo S The presence of the Porsche Panamera Turbo S is announced not by sight, but by sound – a remarkable, low-frequency burble that hints at the formidable power lurking beneath its sculpted exterior. Where the Mustang roars with unbridled aggression, the Panamera’s V8 delivers a deliciously refined yet undeniably menacing murmur. Cropley elaborates on his discerning choice: “I felt this was an opportune moment to showcase an ‘ethical’ V8. I experienced an impressive forty miles of electric range during my drive here this morning, and even after a 150-mile journey, the fuel economy registered a commendable 45 miles per gallon. Yet, when the mood strikes, its V8 unleashes a truly spectacular aural performance. The four-wheel steering system makes it remarkably agile, even on these intricate country lanes. Its craftsmanship is impeccable, and the air suspension is simply sublime. I genuinely believe it represents the pinnacle of the luxury grand tourer segment. We often discuss plug-in hybrids as offering the best of both worlds; the Panamera’s potent combination of substantial electric range and the visceral thrill of a V8 when desired possesses undeniable logic.” I find myself in complete agreement. The Porsche Panamera Turbo S, even in the somewhat unconventional bronze hue of our test vehicle, exudes the effortless brilliance of a Mercedes-Benz S-Class during leisurely touring, while retaining the soul of a sports car for those moments when performance is craved. It is an absolute joy to behold and to drive. I, too, have a particular fondness for the air suspension, which gracefully elevates the entire car as if greeting an eager puppy upon unlocking. Furthermore, its massaging seats are arguably the finest I have ever encountered. Any one of those alone would constitute a remarkable Christmas present, let alone when paired with a potent V8 plug-in hybrid powertrain. The Panamera stands in striking contrast to the Prius and the Mustang, yet perhaps even more disparate from our collective selections is another bronze marvel: the Morgan Supersport. The Timeless Artisan: Morgan Supersport
I had the distinct pleasure of piloting this very Morgan Supersport earlier this year in the Welsh countryside, directly comparing it with a Hyundai Ioniq 5 N in a celebration of automotive engineering at its most extreme. It was a strong contender for my personal highlight of the year, and I seriously considered bringing it to this gathering. There is an undeniable allure to Morgan’s modern interpretation of its iconic styling, imbuing the Supersport with a peculiar steampunk aesthetic. The appeal of a lightweight, rear-wheel-drive machine delivering precisely the right amount of power with such tactile feedback is simply irresistible. It is, without question, a gem. And it is this very essence that has led our editor-at-large, Matt Prior, to select it for our Christmas assembly. Prior shares his enthusiasm: “I find it utterly charming. It’s a wonderfully idiosyncratic car. I appreciate its distinctive appearance, its artisanal construction, and the sheer pleasure it provides when driven. Does it have a mechanical cadence akin to a sewing machine? Yes. But can I identify any other vehicle I’ve driven this year that sparks such genuine interest? Not a single one.” He articulates the sentiment perfectly. With that resonant endorsement, let us transition to my own personal selection: the Renault 5. The Electric Icon Reimagined: Renault 5 This car holds a special place in my affections. My admiration began during a journey to the northernmost reaches of Denmark in my capacity as a juror for the European Car of the Year awards at the close of 2024. It was then that I stood back and pondered if this diminutive electric vehicle might represent a genuine turning point for affordable electric mobility. As my time with the Renault 5 lengthened, punctuated by various other excursions, it became apparent that its significance extended beyond its electric powertrain. I believe this car is actively resurrecting the spirit of fun, affordable small cars. Regardless of propulsion, the Renault 5 is an absolute delight to drive, whether navigating urban traffic or enthusiastically tackling the sinuous curves of Beachy Head. It possesses an aspirational quality despite its accessible price point. It embodies what small cars once represented when vehicles like the Saxo, 106, Corsa, and Fiesta were highly coveted by younger generations. Renault has, through some alchemical process, recaptured that magic in the Renault 5. BMW achieved a similar feat with its reimagined Mini, and Fiat did likewise with the reinvented 500. Now, Renault has successfully replicated this formula with the Renault 5. Who requires a Prius to embody affordability and efficiency when the Renault 5 delivers all of that with an undeniable dash of cool? The Notable Absences and Their Hypothetical Choices With that resounding declaration, it’s imperative to acknowledge a glaring omission from our gathering – or rather, two significant ones. Road test editor Matt Saunders and his deputy, Richard Lane, are both conspicuously absent from this festive reunion. This leads us to speculate on the vehicles they would have undoubtedly brought had they not been detained by childcare duties or pre-planned holidays. The consensus among everyone present was immediate and unwavering: “Ricky would have brought a Porsche 911.” This was not merely a suggestion; it was a collective certainty, echoed by individuals who had no prior acquaintance with Ricky or Autocar. Even the local pub landlord, a passing parking attendant, and a travelling psychic concurred with the assertion that a Porsche 911 would have been Ricky’s choice. In fact, upon arrival, James Disdale and I exchanged bemused glances, questioning the absence of a Porsche 911 from our assembled ranks. Its perennial brilliance arguably warrants its inclusion, and its absence was keenly felt. The truth is, none of us brought one, as we all assumed Ricky would be championing it. Alas, neither Ricky nor his would-be Porsche 911 materialized today. But which variant of the ever-expanding Porsche 911 range would he have selected? This presents a more intricate question. However, it speaks volumes that the collective verdict leans towards the Carrera S, or perhaps even the GT3 RS. Yet, the most probable choice remains the Carrera S. And who could blame him? We missed both Ricky and the Porsche 911, but perhaps next year will bring their triumphant return. As for Mr. Saunders, while the temptation to assign him another brown Volvo estate is present, the prevailing opinion is that our esteemed road test editor would likely have presented the Land Rover Defender Octa. A 626bhp Land Rover Defender – a Christmas wish list item for any enthusiast. In conclusion, gentlemen, for next year’s gathering, our only request is your presence. In the interim, before I hand over to Sam for the final verdict, I extend my warmest wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. May your festive drives be filled with joy and unparalleled driving pleasure. The Verdict – Judged by Sam Phillips Matt Prior’s enthusiastic claims regarding the Morgan Supersport’s driving dynamics proved to be well-founded during my brief tenure behind the wheel before lunch. However, I concur that while its driving prowess is undeniable, the Supersport lacks the all-around versatility required for a primary vehicle in a typical two-car garage. James Disdale’s case for the Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid was compelling. His observations regarding its futuristic aesthetic, pleasing driving characteristics, and inherent affordability were entirely valid. Curiously, he then attempted to discreetly slip me a ten-pound note, leading me to question the absolute conviction behind his endorsement of the Prius.
Steve Cropley passionately advocated for the Porsche Panamera Turbo S, highlighting its phenomenal ride quality, impressive fuel efficiency, and blistering performance. It is, without doubt, a segment leader and an excellent choice for many plug-in hybrid consumers. However, its considerable weight and premium price tag are difficult to ignore. I was genuinely captivated by Illya Verpraet’s manual Ford Mustang Dark Horse. In 2025, a year where regulations often seem to conspire against V8 muscle cars, its existence is a defiant statement. While an excellent choice, even Illya conceded to feeling a touch conspicuous at the wheel. Vicky Parrott presented a well-reasoned argument for the Renault 5, acknowledging its retro charm, respectable range, and accessible pricing. It transforms mundane urban commutes into enjoyable excursions and proves equally rewarding when pushed to its dynamic limits – a characteristic rarely seen in the supermini segment since BMW’s reinvention of the Mini. In many respects, the Renault 5 has fundamentally reshaped the discourse surrounding electric vehicles, demonstrating that electric cars can be both exhilarating to drive and attractively priced without compromising on perceived quality. There were considerable expectations surrounding the Renault 5 prior to its launch. The fact that it has not only met but arguably exceeded these expectations, while simultaneously capturing the cultural zeitgeist, firmly establishes it as our champion. Our Dream Christmas Drives Vicky Parrott: My ideal Christmas Day drive would involve navigating the picturesque routes of Cranborne Chase in Dorset, perhaps even venturing along Zig Zag Hill. Having grown up in the vicinity, this area holds cherished memories, including my very first driving experience in a 1984 Renault 5, which I acquired in 2002 for a mere £50. That car remains dear to me, but the advancements in automotive technology over the past two decades are simply astounding. Matt Prior: An early start, heading towards the west coast, a leisurely pace, with a picnic packed for enjoyment by the seaside. The Morgan Supersport is inherently a romantic grand tourer, not a pure sports car. We’d enjoy lunch by the shore, turning homeward in the mid-afternoon, bathed in the warm glow of the setting sun filtering through that expansive rear window. Steve Cropley: For years, I’ve harbored a desire for a comprehensive exploration of the Malvern Hills, having always been captivated by their inspiring scenery and engaging roads, glimpsed during brief, work-related visits to Morgan. I would utilize the formidable Porsche Panamera Turbo S to leisurely traverse and discover promising regions over several days. Illya Verpraet: I have yet to experience the United States firsthand, and contrary to prevailing stereotypes, it boasts some truly spectacular winding roads. Now that modern vehicles are capable of traversing such terrain with aplomb, I envision exploring the iconic canyon roads of California. And with the Dark Horse’s formidable 453 horsepower, I should have ample capability to evade any unforeseen… obstacles. James Disdale: For a festive excursion, I would embrace the vibrant, Santa-red finish of our Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid test car, utilizing it for the joyous task of delivering presents to friends and family across the country. Given the Prius’s genuinely engaging driving dynamics, I would undoubtedly seek out the most circuitous and twisty routes afforded by the quiet Christmas roads. Our New Year’s Resolutions Vicky Parrott: My cherished 1992 Mercedes SL has unfortunately seen insufficient use over the past year. As the wise Steve Cropley once advised, the most crucial element for any car is having a purpose, a destination. For the coming year, I plan to embark on a road trip with a friend who has also recently acquired an SL, and I am eager to take my nine-year-old daughter to the Goodwood Revival. My resolution is simple: to create lasting memories. Matt Prior: I intend to transform my Land Rover Defender into a soft-top, transitioning it from a utilitarian workhorse – a role now admirably filled by my Audi A2 – into a more enjoyable weekend companion. I anticipate using it less frequently, but undoubtedly, enjoying it immeasurably more. Steve Cropley: In the New Year, my aim is to drive as extensively as ever, but I shall commence my journeys with an earlier start. Driving is particularly pleasurable when traffic is sparse, a benefit that generally extends well into the day. The most reliable method to achieve this is, by and large, to depart before the majority of drivers have commenced their own journeys. Illya Verpraet: I recognize the need to utilize my personal vehicles more frequently, and I am overdue for a significant continental road trip, an endeavor I was unable to undertake this past year. My recently acquired BMW E30 is currently undergoing winter maintenance, and it will serve as the perfect vehicle to fulfill these two objectives, while hopefully accomplishing many other driving goals as well. James Disdale: I confess this ambition annually, but for 2026, I am resolute. After a decade of neglect, languishing under a protective cover, I am finally committed to resurrecting the Mk2 Volkswagen Golf GTI, a vehicle that has been registered in my name since 2003. However, I suspect I shall be making precisely the same declaration this time next year. Ready to Elevate Your Drive? As the dust settles on our festive automotive debate, the spirit of driving excellence continues to burn bright.
