The Ultimate Autocar 2025 Yuletide Drive-Off: Beyond the Turkey, A Celebration of Automotive Excellence
As the frost begins to bite and the scent of pine needles fills the air, a beloved Autocar tradition returns, albeit with a distinctly modern twist. While the festive season typically conjures images of crackling fireplaces and shared carols, for our dedicated team of automotive experts, it signals the commencement of our annual Yuletide Drive-Off. Forget the predictable Secret Santa; this year, we’re diving headfirst into a spirited debate, showcasing the vehicles we believe truly represent the pinnacle of automotive achievement in 2025. For a decade now, I’ve had the distinct pleasure of navigating the ever-evolving landscape of new vehicle releases, and this year’s contenders for the “Best Car of 2025” are a testament to the industry’s relentless pursuit of innovation, performance, and sheer driving joy.
It’s a curious thing, isn’t it, how traditions evolve? In my own home, the holiday season officially kicks off with the unpacking of worn, yet cherished, decorations and the soundtrack of a classic film, a ritual that signals the true start of the festive period. Similarly, at Autocar Towers, our own benchmark for the commencement of Christmas cheer is none other than our annual road testers’ Yuletide Drive-Off. In years past, we’ve engaged in the slightly awkward tradition of gifting surprise vehicles to our colleagues – a practice that has, at times, yielded more bemusement than gratitude. I recall one particular instance where a certain esteemed road test editor’s reaction to a rather… understated, ochre-hued estate car was less than enthusiastic.
This year, however, we’ve opted for a more direct, and perhaps more revealing, approach. The directive is simple: each of us must arrive with a car launched within the past twelve months that we champion. This championing can stem from personal affection, a deep-seated admiration for its engineering, or a conviction that it stands as the most outstanding vehicle of the year, for reasons that resonate with our individual expertise. The ultimate arbiter of this automotive showdown? Our esteemed Staff Writer, Sam Phillips, tasked with delivering a definitive verdict.
Let’s be frank, this is the kind of scenario that fuels the dreams of any automotive enthusiast. The opportunity to engage with manufacturers, to select a vehicle that encapsulates the very best of what the past year has offered, and then to present it for peer review – it’s a privilege. While some might argue that every day at Autocar feels like a celebration of automotive brilliance, this particular event certainly ranks among the most anticipated office gatherings. Considering the breadth of vehicular splendor and technological wizardry that has graced our roads throughout 2025, where do we begin? Our journey into this festive automotive landscape commences with a vehicle that has undergone a remarkable metamorphosis: the 2025 Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid.
The Resurgent Icon: 2025 Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid
As the Prius glides with an almost ethereal silence through the misty morning air blanketing the dramatic coastline, I confess, a fleeting thought crosses my mind: could that be a high-end taxi arriving? It’s a testament to the Prius’s enduring, albeit once niche, presence. Contributing writer James Disdale voices a sentiment shared by many, admitting, “Honestly, if you’d told me twenty years ago that I’d be nominating a Toyota Prius for this prestigious accolade, I’d have likely chuckled.”
However, he quickly elaborates, “But then, reflect on its inception twenty-five years ago. The original Prius was lauded for bringing genuinely clever powertrain technology to an accessible package. And you know what? That ethos persists. It has become an almost ubiquitous fixture in the taxi and ride-sharing fleets, and for good reason: the Prius delivers exceptional efficiency and renowned reliability. In these somewhat uncertain economic times, championing a car that consistently delivers on practicality and value makes immense sense. As the focus on fuel economy and the responsible use of resources intensifies, this hybrid powertrain isn’t just relevant; it’s becoming increasingly vital. And before you dismiss it with outdated notions, I assure you, the driving dynamics have moved lightyears ahead.”
There’s a profound truth in his assessment. A brief excursion behind the wheel, tracing the ribbon of road that winds along the Sussex coast towards the iconic Beachy Head lighthouse, reveals a surprisingly satisfying driving experience. The seamless interplay of its hybrid system, the quiet confidence with which it navigates, evokes a sense of understated competence. As Disdale aptly puts it, “The Prius, at its best, possesses a certain Saab-like intelligence, perhaps even a whisper of contemporary DS design. It’s a remarkably cohesive and intelligent vehicle.” This focus on Toyota Prius performance and efficiency marks a significant evolution.
Unleashing the Roar: Ford Mustang Dark Horse
In stark contrast to the eco-conscious pragmatism of the Prius, road tester Illya Verpraet arrives with a vehicle that seems to deliberately defy the prevailing cost-of-living narrative. The Ford Mustang Dark Horse cuts a deliciously brooding figure amidst our cheerful gathering, a potent embodiment of unadulterated automotive passion.
Its mere presence ignites a childlike exuberance within me, a visceral thrill that only a V8 muscle car can impart. The anticipation as it rolls into our assembly point is palpable. And with a manual gearbox, no less!
“I felt the Mustang received a somewhat raw deal during last year’s ‘Handling Day’ trials, primarily because the automatic transmission simply didn’t do justice to its potential,” explains Verpraet. “However, experiencing it with the manual shifter was an entirely different proposition. It’s a refreshingly anachronistic machine. It may not boast cutting-edge sophistication, but it delivers an unvarnished, exhilarating fun factor. It does, I admit, make me feel a touch self-conscious, but the sheer unadulterated joy it provides is undeniable.”
For me, the guttural symphony emanating from the Dark Horse’s V8 alone is enough to make this festive occasion memorable. Speaking of sonorous V8 soundtracks, an unexpected yet utterly delightful entrant is editor-in-chief Steve Cropley’s Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid. This isn’t just about a powerful engine; it’s about a sophisticated blend of performance and electrification, a high-CPC keyword in the premium sedan segment.
The Electrified Grand Tourer: Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid
The unmistakable, low-frequency rumble of the Panamera’s V8 announces its arrival long before it comes into view. Where the Mustang bellows with unrestrained enthusiasm, the Panamera’s V8 offers a more refined, yet equally menacing, murmur.
“I saw this as a unique opportunity to showcase a V8 with a conscience,” Cropley reveals, as we patiently await photographer Max’s perfect static shot, ensuring his feet remain firmly planted on terra firma. “I drove it here this morning, achieved a commendable 40 miles of electric-only range, and after a 150-mile journey, the fuel economy readout hovered around an impressive 45 miles per gallon. But give it the beans, and the soundtrack is simply sensational. The addition of four-wheel steering transforms its agility on these sinuous country lanes, the build quality is impeccable, and the air suspension system is nothing short of brilliant. I genuinely believe it represents the zenith of the luxury performance sedan segment. We often discuss the merits of plug-in hybrids offering the ‘best of both worlds’; in the Panamera’s case, a substantial electric range married to a potent V8 offers a compelling and logical proposition.”
I find myself in complete agreement. The Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid, even in the rather striking, if unconventional, bronze hue of our test example, exudes the effortless sophistication of a Mercedes S-Class for daily touring, yet possesses the heart and soul of a true sports car when the mood strikes. It’s a genuine delight. I, too, am particularly impressed by the air suspension, which visibly elevates the vehicle upon unlocking, akin to an eager puppy greeting its owner. And let’s not overlook the massage seats – quite possibly the most advanced and comforting I’ve ever experienced. A single one of those would be a remarkable Christmas gift, let alone integrated into a V8-powered plug-in hybrid marvel. The Porsche Panamera price reflects its status as a premium offering, but the value proposition for performance and technology is undeniable.
While the Panamera stands in striking contrast to the Prius, it feels even more disparate from our next contender, another bronze beauty: the 2025 Morgan Supersport.
Timeless Craftsmanship: Morgan Supersport
I had the distinct pleasure of experiencing this very machine in Wales earlier this year, a direct comparison against the ferocious Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, serving as a celebration of the extreme ends of performance engineering. The Supersport was a strong contender for my personal highlight of the year, and indeed, for this event.
I’m captivated by Morgan’s modern interpretation of its signature styling, which imbues the Supersport with an almost steampunk allure. The allure of a lightweight, rear-wheel-drive machine, boasting precisely the right amount of power and a profoundly tactile driving experience, is simply irresistible. It’s an absolute gem. And that, fundamentally, is why our editor-at-large, Matt Prior, has selected it for our Yuletide gathering.
“I simply adore this car. It’s unapologetically quirky,” Prior enthuses. “I appreciate its distinctive aesthetic, its unique construction methods, and the sheer enjoyment it provides from behind the wheel. It never fails to bring a smile to my face. Does it exhibit a certain mechanical cadence? Absolutely. But honestly, have I driven anything else this year that has stirred my senses quite like it? I think not.” Is further elaboration necessary? The Morgan Supersport price positions it as a niche enthusiast vehicle, but its impact is undeniable.
The Affordable Future: 2025 Renault 5
And now, to conclude our initial round of individual selections, allow me to present my own champion: the 2025 Renault 5.
I’ve harbored a deep affection for this car since embarking on an extensive journey to the northernmost reaches of Denmark for my duties as a Car of the Year juror at the close of 2024. It was during that trip that I found myself contemplating whether this modest electric hatchback might represent a significant turning point for the affordability of electric vehicles.
However, as I spent more time with the Renault, traversing varied landscapes and completing numerous daily commutes, it became clear that its significance extended far beyond its electric powertrain. I firmly believe the Renault 5 is revitalizing the segment for fun, affordable, small cars. Regardless of powertrain, this vehicle is an absolute joy to drive, whether you’re meandering through city streets or engaging in spirited driving along scenic routes.
It’s aspirational, yet remarkably attainable. It embodies what small cars used to represent during an era when models like the Saxo, the 106, the Corsa, and the Fiesta were highly coveted by younger generations. Somehow, Renault has recaptured that elusive magic with the 5. BMW achieved a similar feat with its reinvented Mini, and Fiat replicated that success with the new 500. Now, Renault has definitively achieved it with the 5.
Who needs a Prius to represent affordability and efficiency when you can have all that, coupled with an undeniable sense of cool? The Renault 5 price is a critical factor here, democratizing desirable electric motoring.
The Unseen Contenders: When the Bench is Empty
With that resounding declaration, I must draw your attention to a conspicuous absence – or rather, two of them. Road test editor Matt Saunders and his deputy, Richard Lane, are both regrettably absent from this festive reunion.
And so, we conclude our Christmas lunch by speculating on the vehicles they would have brought had they not been unavoidably detained by childcare responsibilities or pre-planned holidays.
“Ricky would have undoubtedly brought a Porsche 911,” was the unanimous verdict echoed by every individual present. There were patrons at a nearby table in the pub, complete strangers to Ricky and completely unaware of Autocar’s existence, who all concurred: a 911 would have been his choice. The pub landlord chimed in, the parking attendant nodded in agreement, and even a passing psychic predicted his attendance with a 911 next year. The consensus was overwhelming: Ricky would have brought a 911.
In fact, concerning these absences at our Yuletide gathering, Disdale and I exchanged jubilant greetings across the car park upon arrival. Before any semblance of polite conversation could commence, we both scanned the surroundings and inquired, with genuine bewilderment, why a 911 was conspicuously absent.
A 911 truly should have been present, such is its perennial brilliance and enduring appeal. The reality is, none of us brought one, as we all universally assumed Ricky would be championing it. Sadly, neither the car nor its usual proponent materialized on the day.
But which iteration of the increasingly diverse 911 range would he have chosen, one might ponder? That’s a more intricate question. Yet, perhaps to his credit, the collective consensus leans towards the Porsche 911 Carrera S. Or perhaps a GT3 RS… but most likely the Carrera S. And who can blame him? We missed Ricky, and we missed the 911. But perhaps next year, we’ll have both. The Porsche 911 price range is vast, making Ricky’s likely choice a matter of keen interest.
As for Mr. Saunders? While the temptation to place him in another unassuming brown Volvo estate is strong, the prevailing opinion is that our esteemed road test editor would likely have presented the Land Rover Defender Octa. A 626bhp Land Rover Defender, no less. Who wouldn’t wish for such a formidable machine this Christmas? The Land Rover Defender Octa price places it firmly in the ultra-luxury performance SUV segment.
The Verdict: A Judgement by Sam Phillips
Matt Prior’s assertions regarding the Morgan Supersport’s driving prowess were unequivocally validated during my brief tenure behind the wheel before lunch. However, I concur that the Supersport, while brilliant, lacks the all-around versatility required for a primary or even secondary vehicle in a typical garage.
James’s advocacy for the Toyota Prius was compelling. His observations regarding its futuristic aesthetics, agreeable handling characteristics, and accessible price point were entirely valid. My esteemed colleague then attempted, rather surreptitiously, to press a ten-pound note into my hand, leading me to question the absolute conviction behind his Prius endorsement.
Steve’s championing of the Porsche Panamera highlighted its phenomenal ride quality, impressive fuel efficiency, and blistering performance. It is, without question, a segment leader and will undoubtedly appeal to a considerable number of plug-in hybrid consumers. However, its considerable bulk and premium price tag are undeniable factors.
I found myself genuinely captivated by Illya’s manual Ford Mustang Dark Horse. In 2025, a year where regulations often seem to conspire against the traditional V8 muscle car, its very existence is a triumph. A superb choice, certainly, though even Illya conceded that he felt a tad conspicuous while piloting it.
Vicky’s argument for the Renault 5 was meticulously constructed, acknowledging its nostalgic design, respectable range, and affordability. It transforms mundane short trips into enjoyable excursions and proves equally engaging when driven with spirited intent, a feat rarely achieved by a supermini since BMW’s reincarnation of the Mini.
In many respects, the Renault 5 has fundamentally altered the discourse surrounding electric vehicles, demonstrating that EVs can indeed be both fun to drive and surprisingly inexpensive without compromising on perceived quality.
There was considerable anticipation surrounding the Renault 5’s launch, and the fact that it has not only met but arguably exceeded these expectations, while simultaneously capturing a significant cultural moment, firmly establishes it as our outright winner. The best electric car 2025 discussion is significantly enriched by its presence.
Our Dream Christmas Drives
Vicky Parrott: My ideal Christmas Day drive would involve navigating the picturesque routes of Cranborne Chase in Dorset, perhaps even traversing the iconic Zig Zag Hill. Having grown up in the vicinity, this area is steeped in fond memories, including my very first car – a 1984 Renault 5 – which I purchased in 2002 for a mere fifty pounds. I adored that car, and always will, but the advancements over the intervening decades are simply astounding.
Matt Prior: An early start, heading towards the captivating west coast, a leisurely pace, with a picnic basket nestled securely in the boot. The Supersport is, at its core, a romantic grand tourer, not a hardcore sports car. A shoreside lunch, with a gentle return journey mid-afternoon, bathed in the warm glow of the setting sun streaming through that expansive rear window.
Steve Cropley: For years, I’ve harbored a desire to undertake a comprehensive tour of the Malvern Hills, having always been captivated by its inspirational scenery and the intriguing roads I’ve glimpsed during necessarily brief visits to Morgan. I would leverage the capabilities of the Panamera to leisurely explore promising regions over several days.
Illya Verpraet: I’ve never had the opportunity to truly explore the United States, and contrary to prevalent stereotypes, I understand it boasts some truly spectacular winding roads. Now that vehicles capable of confidently tackling such terrain are readily available, I’d be keen to experience the legendary canyon roads of California. And the Mustang Dark Horse’s 453bhp should prove more than adequate for a swift departure should any… unexpected encounters arise.
James Disdale: For a festive excursion, I’d embrace the vibrant, Santa-red finish of our Prius test car and utilize it to deliver presents to friends and family scattered across the country. Given the Prius’s genuinely engaging driving dynamics, I would undoubtedly take advantage of the quiet roads to seek out the most exhilarating routes.
Our New Year’s Resolutions for the Open Road
Vicky Parrott: My 1992 Mercedes SL has languished, sadly, underused for the past year. A wise individual, Steve Cropley, once imparted the wisdom that having a destination for your vehicle is paramount. In the coming year, I plan to embark on a road trip with a friend who has also recently acquired an SL, and I’m eager to take my nine-year-old daughter to the Goodwood Revival. Ultimately, my resolution is to create cherished memories.
Matt Prior: I intend to transform my Land Rover Defender from a utilitarian workhorse into a more relaxed, soft-top weekend companion – a role now filled by my Audi A2. It will likely see less frequent use, but undoubtedly, considerably more enjoyment.
Steve Cropley: In the new year, I aim to drive as much as ever, but with a newfound commitment to commencing my journeys earlier in the day. Driving is particularly rewarding when traffic is sparse – a benefit that often extends well into the day. The surest way to guarantee this, generally speaking, is to depart before the majority of drivers have even left their homes.
Illya Verpraet: I recognize the need to utilize my own vehicles more frequently and have a significant continental road trip planned, which unfortunately didn’t materialize this year. My recently acquired BMW E30 is currently undergoing winter servicing and will be instrumental in fulfilling this objective.
James Disdale: I confess this every year, but for 2026, I am absolutely resolute. After a decade of neglect, leaving it languishing under a cover, I will finally commence the resurrection of my Mk2 Volkswagen Golf GTI, which has been registered in my name since 2003. However, I fully anticipate making the exact same declaration this time next year…
As the year draws to a close and we reflect on the exceptional automotive talent on display, it’s clear that 2025 has been a landmark year for the automotive industry. The diversity of contenders, from the hyper-efficient to the unapologetically powerful, speaks volumes about the choices available to discerning drivers. We invite you to share your own automotive highlights and aspirations for the coming year. What vehicle captured your imagination in 2025, and what are your driving dreams for 2026?
