H0001024_Deputy Walks In On Fellow Officer, What He Finds_part2 | Áddaadsd The Pinnacle of Automotive Excellence: Our 2025 Holiday Drive Summit As the year 2025 draws to a close, a cherished tradition unfolds within the hallowed halls of our editorial team. It’s not merely about the festive season; it’s about celebrating the pinnacle of automotive engineering and design that has graced our roads over the past twelve months. This year, eschewing the usual gift exchange, we’ve embarked on a more profound endeavor: each of us brings forth a vehicle we champion, a machine that represents the zenith of our professional judgment or personal adoration. The ultimate arbiter? Our discerning colleague, who will crown one of these automotive gems as the undisputed champion of 2025. For ten years, I’ve witnessed the evolution of automotive technology, the shifting sands of consumer preference, and the enduring passion that fuels this industry. This year’s assembly promises a particularly fascinating discourse, a true testament to the diversity and innovation on display. The Vanguard of Efficiency: The Reimagined Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid Emerging from the morning’s ethereal mist, its aerodynamic silhouette slicing through the coastal haze, the Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid initially suggests a common sight – perhaps a discerning taxi. Yet, its presence here is anything but ordinary. My colleague, James Disdale, a veteran observer of the automotive landscape, admits, “Twenty years ago, if you’d told me I’d be nominating a Toyota Prius, I’d have scoffed.” He continues, his voice resonating with genuine appreciation, “But consider its genesis 25 years ago. The original Prius was lauded for bringing groundbreaking powertrain technology to an accessible price point. And today? That very ethos persists. While its ubiquity in commercial fleets is well-earned, it stems from an unwavering commitment to efficiency and reliability. In these uncertain economic times, championing a true workhorse, a vehicle that delivers consistent, dependable performance, is a remarkably sensible choice. As our reliance on fuel efficiency and sustainable material use intensifies, the Prius’s hybrid powertrain only grows in relevance. And for those still dwelling on taxi metaphors, I assure you, its driving dynamics have evolved considerably.” My brief excursion behind the wheel confirms his sentiment. Gliding along the ribbon of road that hugs the Sussex coast, the Prius’s smooth, almost silent operation is surprisingly satisfying. It possesses a subtle sophistication, a character that James aptly likens to “elements of Saab in its prime, perhaps even a nod to the modern DS Automobiles.” This is no mere appliance; it’s a testament to intelligent engineering that prioritizes sustainable mobility without sacrificing the driving experience. Its ability to seamlessly blend electric propulsion with its efficient gasoline engine offers a compelling proposition for the discerning driver navigating the complexities of modern commuting. The Prius, in its latest iteration, stands as a beacon of thoughtful innovation in the realm of eco-conscious personal transport. The Roaring Icon: The Ford Mustang Dark Horse In stark contrast to the Prius’s measured approach, road tester Illya Verpraet has seemingly sidestepped any concerns about the prevailing cost of living crisis. His chosen steed, the Ford Mustang Dark Horse, commands attention with its deliciously brooding presence, a defiant roar amidst our otherwise serene gathering. Simply being in its vicinity ignites a childlike excitement, a palpable sense of anticipation that only a V8 muscle car can evoke. Its arrival prompts an almost involuntary applause. And the fact that it’s equipped with a manual gearbox only amplifies its allure. Illya elaborates, “The Mustang faced a slight disadvantage at last year’s ‘Handling Day’ due to its automatic transmission, which didn’t quite capture its true essence. However, experiencing it with the manual gearbox was a revelation. It’s a wonderfully anachronistic machine, eschewing overt sophistication for sheer, unadulterated fun. While it might induce a touch of self-consciousness, its raw charm is undeniable.” The very sound emanating from the Dark Horse is, frankly, enough to make my Christmas. But speaking of V8 symphonies, an unexpected delight arrives in the form of editor-in-chief Steve Cropley’s Porsche Panamera Turbo S. The Refined Powerhouse: The Porsche Panamera Turbo S Its distinctive, low-frequency burble precedes its arrival. Where the Mustang embodies a thunderous crescendo, the Panamera’s V8 orchestrates a symphony of refined power, a deliciously menacing undertone. “I felt this presented an ideal opportunity to showcase an ‘ethical’ V8,” Steve explains, as we eagerly await the perfect shot of the static vehicles. “Driving it here this morning, I achieved 40 miles of pure electric range, and after a 150-mile journey, the onboard computer indicated an impressive 45 miles per gallon. And when you unleash its full potential, the sound is absolutely phenomenal. The four-wheel steering makes navigating these intricate roads effortless, the craftsmanship is impeccable, and the air suspension delivers a ride quality that is simply sublime. I consider it the benchmark of its luxury sedan class. We often discuss the advantages of plug-in hybrids, and the Panamera perfectly encapsulates that philosophy, offering substantial EV range for daily duties, coupled with the visceral thrill of a V8 for those moments when you desire it.” I cannot disagree. The Panamera Turbo S, even in the somewhat unconventional bronze hue of our test example, possesses the effortless composure of a Mercedes S-Class for grand touring, yet harbors the heart of a sports car for those who seek it. It is a genuine joy to behold and to drive. I, too, am particularly impressed by the air suspension; the car visibly rises like an eager canine upon unlocking. And the massage seats? Quite possibly the finest I’ve ever encountered. A single one of those would be a remarkable Christmas present, let alone as part of a V8 plug-in hybrid package. While it stands in stark contrast to the Prius and the Mustang, perhaps even more distinct from our other contenders is another bronze marvel: a Morgan Supersport.
The Evocative Masterpiece: The Morgan Supersport I had the distinct pleasure of driving this very car in Wales earlier this year, directly comparing it with the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N – a true celebration of automotive extremes. The Supersport was a strong contender for my personal highlight of the year. I am captivated by Morgan’s modern interpretation of its iconic styling, imbuing the Supersport with an almost steampunk allure. The allure of a lightweight, rear-wheel-drive machine with precisely calibrated power and tactile feedback is utterly compelling. It’s a true gem. And that, in essence, is why our editor-at-large, Matt Prior, has brought it to our festive gathering. “I find it to be an exceptional vehicle,” Matt states. “It’s undeniably quirky, with a captivating aesthetic and a manufacturing process that is as unique as its driving experience. It consistently brings a smile to my face. Does it possess the refinement of a Swiss watch? Perhaps not. But in terms of sheer automotive intrigue, it’s unmatched by anything else I’ve driven this year.” His sentiment speaks volumes. Let us now turn our attention to my own selection, a car that has truly captured my imagination: the Renault 5. The Spirit of Affordability and Fun: The Renault 5 This car resonates deeply with me. My affection for it began at the close of 2024, during my tenure as a juror for Car of the Year. Driving it to the northernmost reaches of Denmark, I found myself contemplating if this compact electric marvel might signify a paradigm shift for affordable electric vehicles. As my time with the Renault extended through various journeys, I began to realize that its significance transcended its electric powertrain. I firmly believe the R5 is resurrecting the joy of accessible, fun-to-drive small cars. Regardless of powertrain, this car is an absolute delight, whether you’re navigating urban streets or carving through coastal curves. It embodies aspiration, despite its affordability. It evokes the spirit of classic small cars like the Saxo, 106, Corsa, and Fiesta – vehicles that once held immense desirability for younger generations. Renault has, in my estimation, recaptured that magic, much as BMW did with the reinvented Mini and Fiat with the original 500. The Renault 5 now joins that esteemed lineage. Who needs a Prius to represent affordability and efficiency when the Renault 5 offers all that and a generous helping of undeniable cool? The Absent Voices: The Cars They Would Have Brought As our festive lunch draws to a close, a glaring omission becomes apparent – or rather, two. Road test editor Matt Saunders and his deputy, Richard Lane, are conspicuously absent. This prompts a spirited discussion: what automotive treasures would they have presented had they not been detained by familial or holiday commitments? “Ricky would undoubtedly have brought a Porsche 911,” is the unanimous verdict echoed by virtually every person present. Even individuals with no prior knowledge of Autocar or its traditions chimed in with the same prediction. The pub landlord, the parking attendant, and even a passing psychic agreed: Ricky would have arrived in a 911. In fact, upon my own arrival, James Disdale and I exchanged amused glances, both questioning the absence of a 911. Its perennial brilliance truly warrants its inclusion. The reality is, none of us brought one, assuming Ricky would champion it. Alas, neither materialized today. But which variant of the ever-expanding 911 range would he have chosen? That’s a more intricate question. However, to his credit, the collective consensus leans towards the Carrera S, or perhaps the GT3 RS. But the Carrera S seems the most probable. And who can blame him? We miss Ricky and the 911. Perhaps next year. And for Mr. Saunders? While the temptation to assign him another brown Volvo estate is strong, the prevailing opinion is that our esteemed road test editor would likely have presented the Defender Octa. A 626bhp Land Rover Defender – who wouldn’t wish for such a Christmas gift? The Verdict: A Champion Crowned With the day’s proceedings concluded, it falls to me, as the appointed judge, to render my decision. Matt Prior’s assertions about the Morgan Supersport’s driving prowess were indeed validated during my brief experience with it. However, its all-encompassing utility as a second car in a two-car garage falls somewhat short. James’s advocacy for the Prius was robust, and his observations regarding its futuristic aesthetics, engaging dynamics, and inherent affordability were entirely valid. His discreet attempt to slip me a ten-pound note, however, suggested a lingering uncertainty on his part. Steve championed the Panamera, highlighting its remarkable ride quality, impressive fuel economy, and exhilarating performance. It is an undeniable class leader and an excellent choice for many plug-in hybrid enthusiasts, yet its substantial weight and considerable price tag remain significant considerations.
I was thoroughly impressed by Illya’s manual Mustang Dark Horse. In 2025, a year marked by increasingly stringent regulations that often seem to conspire against V8 muscle cars, its presence is a bold statement. While an exceptional choice, even Illya conceded to feeling a tad conspicuous behind the wheel. Vicky’s argument for the Renault 5 was meticulously constructed, acknowledging its nostalgic design, commendable range, and accessible price point. It transforms mundane short trips into enjoyable excursions and offers a rewarding experience when pushed to its limits, a characteristic seldom seen in a supermini since the advent of the reinvented Mini. In many respects, the Renault 5 has redefined the discourse surrounding electric vehicles, unequivocally proving that EVs can be both entertaining and dynamically competent, all while remaining remarkably affordable without compromising on perceived quality. The pressure leading up to the R5’s launch was immense, and its success in achieving these ambitious goals, while simultaneously capturing the cultural zeitgeist, makes it our undisputed champion for 2025. Embracing the Open Road: Our Holiday Driving Dreams Vicky Parrott: My Christmas Day drive would be a scenic exploration of Cranborne Chase in Dorset, perhaps even venturing along Zig Zag Hill. This region holds a special place in my heart, filled with cherished childhood memories, including my first car, a 1984 Renault 5, which I acquired in 2002 for a mere fifty pounds. That car remains a fond memory, a stark contrast to the advancements seen over the past two decades. Matt Prior: An early start towards the west coast, a leisurely pace, with a picnic basket nestled in the boot. The Supersport is a quintessentially romantic grand touring automobile, not a pure sports car. A seaside lunch, followed by a leisurely drive home in the mid-afternoon, bathed in the warm glow of the setting sun filtering through the expansive rear window. Steve Cropley: For years, I’ve harbored a desire for an exhaustive tour of the Malvern Hills, captivated by its inspiring vistas and engaging roads, glimpsed during brief visits to Morgan. The formidable Porsche would be the perfect companion for an extended exploration of its promising landscapes over several days. Illya Verpraet: I’ve yet to experience the United States firsthand. Contrary to popular stereotypes, it boasts some truly spectacular winding roads. Now that automotive engineering allows for such agility, I’m eager to explore the renowned canyon roads of California. The Dark Horse’s 453 horsepower should, hopefully, prove sufficient for any unforeseen circumstances. James Disdale: For my Christmas excursion, I’d embrace the vibrant, Santa-red finish of our Prius test car, using it to deliver gifts to friends and family across the country. Given the Prius’s genuinely engaging driving dynamics, I’d leverage the quiet roads to seek out the most challenging and twisty routes. Looking Ahead: Our New Year’s Aspirations Vicky Parrott: My 1992 Mercedes SL has been underutilized this past year. A wise mentor once advised me that the most crucial element is having a destination for your car. This coming year, I plan a road trip with a fellow SL owner and intend to take my nine-year-old daughter to the Goodwood Revival. My resolution is simple: create lasting memories. Matt Prior: My Land Rover Defender will be transformed into a soft-top, transitioning from a utilitarian workhorse to a more enjoyable weekend companion. Less frequent use, perhaps, but significantly more enjoyment. Steve Cropley: In the new year, my driving habits will remain consistent, but my journeys will commence earlier. Driving is most rewarding when traffic is sparse, and the most reliable way to achieve this is by embarking before the majority of drivers have set off. Illya Verpraet: I am committed to utilizing my personal vehicles more frequently and am overdue for a significant continental road trip, which eluded me this year. My recently acquired BMW E30 is undergoing winter servicing and will be instrumental in achieving these objectives. James Disdale: I make this declaration every year, but for 2026, I truly mean it. After a decade languishing under a cover, I will finally embark on the resurrection of my Mk2 Volkswagen Golf GTI, which has been registered in my name since 2003. However, I suspect I’ll be making the exact same proclamation this time next year. As the year closes and a new one dawns, the automotive world continues its relentless march of innovation. Whether you’re seeking efficiency, exhilaration, or a blend of both, the choices available today are more diverse and compelling than ever before. As you plan your own journeys in the coming year, consider what truly defines the perfect drive for you.
