H0001045_Stoned! NO License, NO Plates, NO Insurance Op_part2 | Áddaadsd The Pinnacle of Automotive Excellence: Autocar’s 2025 Festive Fleet Face-Off The crisp air of late December often brings with it a sense of reflection, a moment to pause amidst the celebratory clamor and consider the year’s triumphs. For us at Autocar, this period is marked by a cherished, if somewhat boisterous, tradition: our annual road testers’ Christmas lunch. It’s an occasion where the usual pleasantries give way to spirited debates, and this year, we’ve escalated the friendly rivalry. Instead of the well-intentioned, yet sometimes questionable, Secret Santa gifts of yesteryear – I recall a certain brown Volvo estate that still elicits a pained expression from our Road Test Editor – we’ve opted for a more direct and arguably more exciting approach. Each of us is tasked with bringing a vehicle launched within the past twelve months, one that we passionately champion as either a personal favorite or the most outstanding automotive achievement of the year. Our esteemed colleague, Sam Phillips, will serve as the ultimate arbiter, tasked with the unenviable but exhilarating duty of crowning our collective champion. This invitation to champion a vehicle, a chance to engage in a vehicular showdown amongst peers, feels like the very embodiment of automotive Christmas wishes coming true. The ability to reach out to manufacturers and procure a vehicle that we are genuinely enthusiastic about, to showcase its merits to colleagues over a festive meal, is indeed a perk of this profession that we never take for granted. While every day at Autocar can feel like a holiday for automotive aficionados, this particular event truly stands out as a highlight of the year. With twelve months of innovation, engineering prowess, and sheer driving pleasure to draw from, the contenders for this year’s honor are as diverse as they are compelling. Let us commence this festive automotive exploration with a vehicle that, at first glance, might evoke a sense of unassuming practicality, yet possesses a depth that belies its outward appearance: the Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid. The Resurgent Champion: Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid As the Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid glides with almost ethereal grace through the morning mist clinging to the dramatic cliffs of Beachy Head, its aerodynamic silhouette initially suggests the arrival of a familiar, perhaps even ubiquitous, mode of transport. Yet, upon closer inspection, and with the weight of its latest iteration, a profound appreciation for its engineering evolution begins to dawn. “Honestly, twenty years ago, if someone had told me I’d be nominating a Toyota Prius for this honor, I’d have dismissed it out of hand,” admits contributor James Disdale, his voice tinged with a newfound respect. “But consider where we were 25 years ago, when the original Prius first arrived,” he continues, his argument building momentum. “It was lauded for integrating groundbreaking powertrain technology into an accessible package. And you know what? That ethos remains. It’s become an undeniable staple for taxi fleets, and for good reason: the Prius is exceptionally efficient, remarkably reliable, and simply a superb car to drive. In these uncertain economic times, championing a true everyday workhorse makes immense sense. As resource efficiency and the responsible use of raw materials become increasingly critical, this hybrid powertrain’s relevance only intensifies. And before anyone makes another tired Uber joke,” he adds with a grin, “you might be surprised by just how engaging it is behind the wheel.” Disdale’s conviction is palpable, and frankly, I find myself agreeing. Taking the Prius for a brief excursion along the winding coastal road that meanders towards the iconic Beachy Head lighthouse, I experience a peculiar sense of satisfaction. The hushed whirring of its electric motors, coupled with the subtle interplay of its hybrid systems, creates a driving experience that is both calming and subtly compelling. As Disdale observes, “The Prius, in its best moments, echoes the intelligent design of a Saab, perhaps even carrying a hint of modern DS Automobiles’ sophisticated character. It’s a truly clever piece of engineering.” This latest Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid transcends its utilitarian roots, offering a compelling blend of efficiency and understated driving pleasure that positions it as a formidable contender in the modern automotive landscape, particularly when considering the growing interest in fuel efficient cars and eco-friendly vehicles. The Roaring Icon: Ford Mustang Dark Horse In stark contrast to the Prius’s mindful efficiency, road tester Illya Verpraet has evidently disregarded any economic austerity measures. The Ford Mustang Dark Horse he presents is a powerfully brooding presence amidst our otherwise cheerful festive assembly. Merely being in its vicinity evokes a childlike sense of anticipation and pure, unadulterated excitement. The visceral appeal of a V8 muscle car, especially one equipped with a manual gearbox, is undeniable. I find myself wanting to applaud as it rolls into our gathering point. “I felt the Mustang didn’t quite get its due when it participated in our ‘Handling Day’ last year, primarily because the automatic transmission wasn’t its strongest suit,” explains Verpraet, his enthusiasm for the manual variant evident. “However, after experiencing it with the manual gearbox, I was thoroughly captivated. It represents a refreshingly anachronistic approach to automotive design. It may not boast cutting-edge sophistication, but it delivers an abundance of sheer fun, and I absolutely adore it, even if it does make me feel a tad self-conscious at times.” For me, the sheer auditory experience of the Dark Horse is enough to make this Christmas complete. Speaking of resonant V8 symphonies, an unexpected and equally delightful auditory spectacle is provided by editor-in-chief Steve Cropley’s chosen steed: the Porsche Panamera Turbo S.
The Sophisticated Powerhouse: Porsche Panamera Turbo S I detect the Porsche Panamera Turbo S before it comes into view. Its presence is announced by a remarkable, low-frequency burble. While the Mustang electrifies with a bold, thundering roar, the Panamera’s V8 unleashes a deliciously refined yet unmistakably potent growl. “I felt this presented an excellent opportunity to showcase an ‘ethical’ V8,” Cropley shares, as we all patiently await photographer Max’s precarious ladder-mounted shot of the static vehicles. “I drove it here this morning, achieving an impressive 40 miles of electric range, and after a 150-mile journey, the fuel economy reading was a remarkable 45 miles per gallon. And when you decide to unleash its full potential, the sound is simply phenomenal. The four-wheel steering makes it remarkably agile on these narrow, winding roads, the build quality is exquisite, and the air suspension system is exceptionally effective. I genuinely believe it’s the pinnacle of that luxury saloon segment. We often discuss plug-in hybrids as offering the best of both worlds; well, a substantial EV range combined with the option of a V8 for when the mood strikes holds significant appeal.” I am in complete agreement. The Panamera Turbo S, even in the somewhat unconventional bronze hue of our test example, possesses the effortless brilliance of a Mercedes-Benz S-Class for everyday touring, yet harbors the soul of a sports car for those moments when exhilaration is sought. It is, without question, a joyous machine. I, too, am particularly impressed by the air suspension, which causes the entire vehicle to elegantly rise like an eager puppy upon unlocking. Furthermore, its massage seats are, quite possibly, the finest I have ever encountered. One of those seats alone would be a sensational Christmas gift, let alone paired with a potent V8 plug-in hybrid powertrain. The Panamera stands as a strikingly disparate offering from both the Prius and the Mustang, but perhaps even more distinct from our other entries is another bronze marvel: the Morgan Supersport. The Evocative Classic: Morgan Supersport I had the distinct pleasure of driving this very car in Wales earlier this year, back-to-back with a Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, for an article celebrating the extreme ends of performance car engineering. It was a vehicle I seriously considered bringing to this gathering as a personal highlight of my year. I am utterly captivated by Morgan’s modern interpretation of its signature styling, which imbues the Supersport with a peculiar, almost steampunk, allure. The undeniable draw of a lightweight, rear-wheel-drive vehicle offering precisely the right amount of power and tactile feedback is simply intoxicating. It is, in short, a gem. And this, ultimately, is why our editor-at-large, Matt Prior, has selected it for our festive assembly. “I admire it. It’s a quirky car. I appreciate its aesthetic, its construction, and I derive immense pleasure from driving it. It consistently brings a smile to my face,” Prior elaborates. “Does it have the distinctive ‘sewing machine’ tick? Yes. But in all honesty, have I driven anything else this year that possesses the same level of intrigue? Absolutely not.” It’s difficult to argue with such a compelling endorsement. The Future of Fun: Renault 5 Moving on, and concluding our initial lineup, is my own personal choice: the Renault 5. I have held this car in high regard since undertaking my duties as a Car of the Year juror at the close of 2024. A lengthy drive to the northernmost reaches of Denmark in the Renault 5 had me questioning whether this compact electric vehicle might indeed represent a significant turning point for affordable electric cars. Further experiences and extensive time spent with the Renault 5 have solidified a broader appreciation. The electric aspect, while crucial, is only part of its remarkable story. I firmly believe this car is resurrecting the joy and accessibility of small, fun cars. Regardless of its powertrain, the Renault 5 is an absolute delight to drive, whether one is meandering through city streets or enthusiastically navigating the sweeping curves of Beachy Head. It is aspirational, despite its accessible price point. It recaptures the magic that once made cars like the Citroën Saxo, Peugeot 106, Vauxhall Corsa, and Ford Fiesta highly coveted by younger drivers. Much like BMW achieved with its reinvented Mini and Fiat with its reborn 500, Renault has now masterfully replicated that formula with the R5. In a world where efficiency is paramount, why settle for a conventionally efficient car when you can have all that, plus an undeniable dash of cool? The Absent Luminaries and Their Imagined Contenders With that resounding statement, I must draw your attention to a rather glaring omission – or rather, two significant ones. Our Road Test Editor, Matt Saunders, and his Deputy, Richard Lane, are, quite astonishingly, absent from this festive reunion. This leaves us to ponder, and ultimately decide, which automotive treasures they would have brought had they not been indisposed by childcare duties or prior holiday commitments. “Ricky would have brought a Porsche 911,” was the immediate and unanimous verdict uttered by everyone present. We overheard conversations at a nearby table in the pub, involving individuals who had never met Ricky nor were familiar with Autocar, yet they all concurred: a 911 would have been his choice. The pub landlord chimed in with agreement, the parking attendant offered his assent, and even a passing psychic predicted his arrival in one next year. The consensus was unequivocal: Ricky would have brought a 911. In fact, upon our arrival, James Disdale and I exchanged cheerful greetings across the car park, and before any semblance of polite conversation could commence, we both scanned the surrounding vehicles and voiced our shared bewilderment: “Why on earth isn’t there a 911 present?” Truly, there should have been, given its perennial excellence. The reality is, none of us brought one, as we all assumed Ricky would be championing it. Alas, neither Ricky nor his predicted 911 materialized on the day. The next logical question, then, is which iteration of the increasingly diverse 911 range would he have chosen? This is a more nuanced inquiry. However, perhaps to his credit, the communal verdict leans towards the Porsche 911 Carrera S. Or perhaps even a GT3 RS… but most likely, the Carrera S. And who could blame him? We missed Ricky, and we missed the 911, but perhaps next year, the stars – and our schedules – will align. As for Mr. Saunders? While my personal inclination might be to assign him another brown Volvo estate, the prevailing opinion is that our esteemed Road Test Editor would likely have presented the Land Rover Defender Octa. A 626bhp Land Rover Defender, no less. Is there anyone who wouldn’t covet that for Christmas? The Judgement: Sam Phillips’ Verdict With the contenders presented and their champions having made their cases, the moment of reckoning has arrived. Matt Prior’s assertions regarding the Morgan Supersport’s driving brilliance proved entirely valid during my brief experience before lunch. However, I concur that the Supersport, while exquisite, doesn’t quite fulfill the role of a versatile second car in a typical garage. James’s advocacy for the Toyota Prius was compelling. His observations on its futuristic aesthetics, pleasing driving dynamics, and affordability were all pertinent. He then, rather surreptitiously, attempted to press a £10 note into my hand, leading me to question the absolute certainty of his Prius conviction.
Steve championed the Porsche Panamera Turbo S, highlighting its sublime ride quality, impressive fuel efficiency of 45mpg, and blistering performance. It is undoubtedly a class leader and will undoubtedly appeal to many plug-in hybrid buyers. However, its substantial weight and considerable price tag are difficult to overlook. I was genuinely captivated by Illya’s Ford Mustang Dark Horse in its manual configuration. Who wouldn’t be, in 2025, when regulations seem increasingly designed to constrain V8 muscle cars? It’s a fantastic choice, but even Illya conceded that he felt something of an absurd figure behind the wheel. Vicky’s argument for the Renault 5 was meticulously crafted, acknowledging its charming retro styling, respectable range, and accessible price. It transforms mundane short trips into enjoyable excursions and is equally rewarding when driven with spirited abandon, a characteristic rarely seen in a supermini since the reinvented BMW Mini. In numerous respects, the Renault 5 has introduced a fresh perspective to the electric vehicle discourse, demonstrating that EVs can be both engaging to drive and affordably priced without compromising on perceived quality. There was significant anticipation surrounding the launch of the R5, and the fact that it has not only met but arguably exceeded expectations, while simultaneously capturing the cultural zeitgeist, makes it our undisputed winner. Charting the Course: Our Dream Christmas Drives Vicky Parrott: My ideal Christmas Day drive would involve navigating the picturesque routes around Cranborne Chase in Dorset, perhaps even venturing along Zig Zag Hill. Having grown up in the vicinity, I have a wealth of cherished memories associated with this area, including my inaugural driving experiences there in a 1984 Renault 5 – a car I purchased in 2002 for a mere £50. That car holds a special place in my heart, but the advancements made over the past couple of decades are truly astounding. Matt Prior: An early start, heading towards the west coast, indulging in a leisurely pace, with a picnic basket securely stowed in the boot. The Supersport is the epitome of a romantic grand touring machine, not a dedicated sports car. A midday repast by the sea, turning for home in the mid-afternoon, with the setting sun casting its golden light through the expansive rear window, gently warming our backs. Steve Cropley: For years, I’ve harbored a desire to embark on a comprehensive tour of the Malvern Hills. I’ve previously appreciated its inspirational scenery and engaging roads during necessarily brief visits to Morgan. I would utilize the capacious Porsche to dedicate several days to leisurely exploring promising regions. Illya Verpraet: I’ve yet to experience the United States, and contrary to prevailing stereotypes, the country boasts some truly spectacular winding roads. Now that modern automobiles possess the capability to navigate corners with precision, I’m keen to explore the iconic canyon roads of California. And with the Dark Horse’s 453bhp, escaping any unforeseen rogue immigration enforcement squads should prove a manageable endeavor, if necessary. James Disdale: For a festive run, I’d embrace the vibrant, Santa-sleigh red finish of our Toyota Prius test car and employ it for delivering presents to friends and family scattered across the country. Given the Prius’s genuinely engaging driving character, I’d seize the opportunity presented by quiet roads to seek out the most exhilarating routes. New Year’s Automotive Aspirations Vicky Parrott: I own a 1992 Mercedes-Benz SL, which, regrettably, has not been utilized nearly enough over the past year. A wise individual once advised me, and Steve Cropley is that individual, that having a destination for your car is the most crucial element. For the coming year, I’m planning a road trip with a friend who has also recently acquired an SL, and I intend to take my nine-year-old daughter to the Goodwood Revival. My resolution is simple: create lasting memories. Matt Prior: My intention is to transform my Land Rover Defender into a soft-top, shifting its role from a utilitarian workhorse (a job now handled by my Audi A2) to a more enjoyable weekend vehicle. I anticipate using it less frequently but with significantly more enjoyment. Steve Cropley: In the new year, I aim to drive as extensively as ever, but I will commence my journeys by rising earlier. Driving is particularly pleasurable when traffic is sparse, and this benefit often extends well into the day. The most reliable way to ensure this, generally speaking, is to depart before the majority of other drivers have left home. Illya Verpraet: I have a pressing need to utilize my personal vehicles more frequently, and I am due for a significant continental road trip, something I was unable to undertake this year. My recently acquired BMW E30 is currently undergoing winter servicing and will be instrumental in achieving these goals. James Disdale: I make this declaration every year, but for 2026, I am absolutely resolute. After allowing it to languish under a cover for a decade, I am finally going to embark on the resurrection of my Mk2 Volkswagen Golf GTI, which has been registered in my name since 2003. However, I fully expect to be making the exact same proclamation this time next year.
As the year draws to a close, and with the brilliant Renault 5 crowned our champion, the spirit of automotive enthusiasm continues to burn brightly. We invite you to reflect on the incredible machines that have shaped our year and consider what drives you. Whether you’re in the market for a new car in 2026, seeking the ultimate performance car, or prioritizing electric vehicle savings, the automotive landscape offers an exciting array of choices. We encourage you to explore these possibilities further and perhaps even embark on your own dream drives in the coming year.
