H0001017_Cops Realize Dad Trapped His Sons in Burning House_part2 | Áddaadsd 2025’s Pinnacle of Automotive Excellence: A Festive Gathering of Champions The holiday season in the United States is synonymous with cherished traditions. For many, it’s the scent of pine needles and gingerbread, the warmth of a crackling fireplace, and the joy of loved ones gathered. Here at Autocar, we have our own distinct ritual that signifies the true arrival of the festive period: the annual road testers’ Christmas lunch. This year, we’ve eschewed the usual gift exchange for a more spirited, yet equally anticipated, event. Each of our seasoned road testers has arrived with a vehicle they personally champion – a car from the past twelve months that they believe represents the pinnacle of automotive achievement, either through personal appeal or undeniable merit. The formidable task of crowning the ultimate champion falls to our esteemed staff writer, Sam Phillips, who will arbitrate our passionate deliberations. It’s a scenario that embodies the automotive enthusiast’s dream: the opportunity to call upon virtually any manufacturer and select a vehicle to showcase amongst peers, all under the guise of a festive industry gathering. While we acknowledge the inherent privilege of our profession, where exceptional drives are a daily occurrence, this particular event holds a special place in our hearts and calendars. With a year’s worth of groundbreaking engineering and automotive artistry to draw from, the stage is set for a captivating showdown. Let us begin by exploring the contenders that have graced our festive assembly. The Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid: A Resurgence of Pragmatic Brilliance As a beacon of aerodynamic efficiency, the Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid glided through the ethereal morning mist clinging to the majestic cliffs of Beachy Head, initially evoking the image of a sophisticated taxi. Yet, for many, the very sight of this innovative hybrid on our list marks a significant evolution. “Twenty years ago, if you’d told me I’d be nominating a Toyota Prius, I’d have scoffed,” admits contributor James Disdale, readily defending his embrace of eco-conscious sensibility. “But consider its genesis. Twenty-five years ago, the original Prius was lauded for delivering groundbreaking powertrain technology in an accessible package. And that legacy continues. While it’s become the ubiquitous choice for professional drivers – a testament to its exceptional efficiency and unwavering reliability – it remains an outstanding vehicle. In these economically uncertain times, championing a car that excels as an everyday workhorse makes profound sense. As fuel efficiency, resource management, and sustainable practices become increasingly critical, the Prius’s hybrid powertrain is not just relevant; it’s becoming indispensable. And for those still clinging to outdated perceptions, I assure you, it’s a remarkably engaging drive.” Disdale’s assertion resonates deeply. A brief excursion along the ribboning coastal road towards the iconic Beachy Head lighthouse proved surprisingly satisfying. The Prius’s quiet, almost imperceptible, whirring and seamless transitions between power sources are a testament to its advanced engineering. “The Prius exhibits traits reminiscent of the best Saabs of yesteryear, perhaps even a subtle echo of contemporary DS Automobiles,” Disdale elaborates. “It’s a remarkably clever car.” This sentiment underscores the Prius’s transformation from a purely functional appliance to a vehicle that offers a genuinely refined and intelligent driving experience, a far cry from its early iterations. For those seeking a fuel-efficient hybrid SUV or a reliable plug-in hybrid car, the Prius presents a compelling case. The Ford Mustang Dark Horse: A Roaring Rebellion Against Modern Norms In stark contrast to the Prius’s pragmatic elegance, road tester Illya Verpraet has seemingly disregarded the prevailing cost-of-living concerns. The Ford Mustang Dark Horse, a visceral embodiment of American muscle, commanded attention amidst our cheerful gathering. Its mere presence ignited a childlike excitement, a palpable sense of anticipation that only a V8-powered icon can evoke. The addition of a manual gearbox only amplified this visceral thrill. “The Mustang faced an unfair disadvantage at last year’s Handling Day, primarily due to its automatic transmission,” Verpraet explains. “However, piloting the manual variant was an entirely different experience. It’s a wonderfully anachronistic machine. While it may not boast the ultimate in sophistication, its sheer unadulterated fun factor is undeniable. Even if it does elicit a degree of self-consciousness, its appeal is immense.” The guttural symphony emanating from the Dark Horse’s V8 alone was enough to elevate the festive spirit. However, speaking of sensational V8 soundtracks, an unexpected and delightful revelation was editor-in-chief Steve Cropley’s Porsche Panamera Turbo S. The Porsche Panamera Turbo S: The Pinnacle of Electrified Grand Touring Long before its arrival, the distinctive, low-frequency burble of the Panamera Turbo S announced its presence. Where the Mustang thunders with unbridled aggression, the Panamera’s V8 offers a deliciously refined yet subtly menacing growl. “This provided an ideal opportunity to showcase an ‘ethical V8’ experience,” Cropley remarks, as we eagerly await photographer Max’s perfect shot. “This morning’s drive here was exceptional. I achieved nearly 40 miles of pure electric range, and after a 150-mile journey, the onboard computer indicated an impressive 45 miles per gallon. Yet, when you unleash its full potential, the sound is simply magnificent. The four-wheel steering system imbues it with remarkable agility, even on these intricate country lanes. The craftsmanship is exquisite, and the air suspension delivers an incredibly effective and comfortable ride. It truly represents the zenith of the luxury performance sedan segment. We often discuss plug-in hybrids as offering the best of both worlds, and I believe a potent combination of significant EV range and a glorious V8 for spirited driving possesses a compelling logic.”
Cropley’s assessment is spot on. The Porsche Panamera Turbo S, even in the rather unconventional bronze hue of our test car, effortlessly combines the serene composure of a Mercedes-Benz S-Class during daily commutes with the latent soul of a sports car waiting to be awakened. It is an absolute joy to experience. The air suspension, which gracefully raises the vehicle upon unlocking, is a delightful touch. Furthermore, the massaging seats are, without exaggeration, among the finest I have ever encountered – a Christmas gift in themselves, even without the accompanying V8 plug-in hybrid powertrain. The Panamera stands as a strikingly different proposition from the Prius and the Mustang, but perhaps even more distinct from our other entries is another bronze marvel: the Morgan Supersport. The Morgan Supersport: A Steampunk Symphony of Driving Purity I had the distinct pleasure of experiencing this very Morgan Supersport in Wales earlier this year, a direct comparison against the ferocious Hyundai Ioniq 5 N, serving as a celebration of automotive engineering at its most extreme. I seriously considered bringing it to this gathering as a highlight of my year. The modern interpretation of Morgan’s iconic styling lends the Supersport a unique, almost steampunk, aesthetic. The allure of a lightweight, rear-wheel-drive machine delivering precisely the right amount of power and tactility is simply irresistible. It is an absolute gem. This, ultimately, is why editor-at-large Matt Prior selected it for our festive reunion. “I’m enamored with it,” Prior states. “It’s a delightfully quirky car. I appreciate its visual appeal, its construction methods, and most importantly, the sheer pleasure it delivers behind the wheel. It puts a smile on my face, unequivocally. Does it possess a certain mechanical cadence? Yes. But I can honestly say, in the past year, I haven’t driven anything else quite as engaging or unique.” His endorsement needs little further amplification. The Renault 5 E-Tech Electric: Reigniting the Spark of Affordable Fun Now, allow me to present my own personal champion: the Renault 5. This car holds a special place in my automotive affections. My admiration began at the close of 2024, when I embarked on a journey to the northernmost reaches of Denmark for my duties as a Car of the Year juror. During that extended drive, I found myself contemplating whether this compact electric vehicle might indeed represent a pivotal moment for affordable electric cars. Subsequent encounters and further time spent with the Renault solidified this conviction, revealing that its impact extends far beyond its electric credentials. I firmly believe the R5 is resurrecting the spirit of fun, affordable small cars. Regardless of powertrain, this vehicle delivers pure driving enjoyment, whether you’re navigating city streets or tackling exhilarating curves. It is aspirational despite its accessible price point, recapturing the magic that made cars like the Saxo, 106, Corsa, and Fiesta highly coveted by younger generations. Renault has, in essence, bottled that elusive essence, much like BMW did with the reinvented Mini and Fiat with the iconic 500. The Renault 5 now joins that prestigious lineage. Who requires a Prius for affordable efficiency when the Renault 5 offers that and an undeniable sense of cool? With that resounding endorsement, it’s impossible not to acknowledge a glaring omission, or rather, two. Road test editor Matt Saunders and his deputy, Richard Lane, are conspicuously absent from this festive reunion. Their absence, attributed to childcare and holiday commitments, leaves a void we aim to fill by speculating on the vehicles they would have brought had they been present. The Absentee Champions: Hypothetical Contenders “Ricky would have brought a Porsche 911,” was the unanimous verdict from virtually every individual present. Even patrons at a nearby table, unfamiliar with Ricky or Autocar, readily agreed. The pub landlord, the parking attendant, and even a passing psychic all concurred. The consensus was unequivocal: Ricky would have brought a 911. Indeed, upon arriving, James Disdale and I exchanged greetings across the car park, only to immediately question the conspicuous absence of a Porsche 911. Its perennial brilliance arguably warrants its inclusion in any discussion of automotive excellence. The reality is, none of us brought one, assuming Ricky would inevitably champion it. Tragically, neither Ricky nor the 911 materialized today. But which iteration of the ever-expanding 911 range would he have chosen? This is a more nuanced question. However, perhaps to his credit, the collective judgment leans towards the Carrera S. Or possibly a GT3 RS… but most likely, the Carrera S. And who could blame him? We missed both Ricky and the 911. Perhaps next year will bring them both. And what of Mr. Saunders? While the temptation to assign him another brown Volvo estate is strong, the prevailing opinion suggests our esteemed road test editor would have likely presented the Defender Octa. A 626bhp Land Rover Defender – who wouldn’t desire such a formidable presence for Christmas? Next year, gentlemen, our only request is your presence. In the meantime, before I hand over to Sam, I extend my warmest wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. May your festive drives be filled with joy and discovery. The Verdict – Judged by Sam Phillips Matt Prior’s eloquent defense of the Morgan Supersport’s driving dynamics proved accurate during my brief experience before lunch. However, I concur that its singular focus, while admirable, renders it less suitable as a primary second vehicle in a diverse garage. James Disdale’s advocacy for the Toyota Prius was compelling. His observations regarding its futuristic aesthetics, engaging handling, and accessible pricing were all valid. However, his subsequent discreet attempt to press a ten-pound note into my hand suggested a lingering uncertainty about his own conviction.
Steve Cropley championed the Porsche Panamera, highlighting its extraordinary ride quality, impressive fuel economy, and blistering performance. While it is undeniably a segment leader and an excellent choice for many plug-in hybrid users, its considerable weight and premium price tag remain significant considerations. Illya Verpraet’s manual Ford Mustang Dark Horse was undeniably captivating. In 2025, a year where regulations increasingly challenge traditional V8 muscle cars, its presence is a bold statement. It is an inspired choice, though even Illya conceded to feeling a touch self-conscious behind the wheel. Vicky Parrott’s argument for the Renault 5 was meticulously constructed, acknowledging its charming retro design, respectable range, and affordability. It transforms mundane urban commutes into enjoyable excursions and proves equally rewarding when pushed to its limits – a feat not seen in a supermini since BMW revitalized the Mini. In many respects, the Renault 5 has reshaped the narrative surrounding electric vehicles, demonstrating that EVs can be both exhilarating to drive and economically viable without sacrificing perceived quality. There were considerable expectations surrounding the R5’s debut. The fact that it has not only met but arguably exceeded these expectations, while simultaneously capturing the cultural zeitgeist, makes it our definitive winner. Our Dream Christmas Drives Vicky Parrott: My Christmas Day drive would involve exploring the scenic routes of Cranborne Chase in Dorset, perhaps even venturing along Zig Zag Hill. Having grown up in the vicinity, this area holds numerous cherished memories, including my very first car – a 1984 Renault 5 – which I purchased in 2002 for a mere £50. That car remains dear to my heart, and the contrast between then and now, two decades later, is truly remarkable. Matt Prior: An early start towards the west coast, a leisurely pace, with a picnic basket securely stowed in the boot. The Morgan Supersport embodies the spirit of a romantic grand tourer, rather than a dedicated sports car. A scenic lunch by the ocean, followed by a relaxed return journey in the mid-afternoon, bathed in the warm glow of the setting sun through the expansive rear window. Steve Cropley: For years, I’ve yearned to undertake a comprehensive exploration of the Malvern Hills. Their inspirational landscapes and intriguing roads have left a lasting impression from brief visits associated with Morgan. I would leverage the spaciousness of the Panamera to dedicate several days to discovering promising regions at my own pace. Illya Verpraet: My travels have yet to encompass the United States, and contrary to popular perception, the country boasts some truly spectacular winding roads. Now that American automotive engineering can adeptly navigate such challenging terrain, I am eager to explore the iconic canyon roads of California. The Mustang Dark Horse’s 453 horsepower should, in theory, provide ample capability for an expedient departure from any unforeseen encounters. James Disdale: For a festive excursion, I would embrace the vibrant, Santa-esque red finish of our Prius test car and utilize it for delivering presents to friends and family across the country. Given the Prius’s genuinely engaging driving characteristics, I would seize the opportunity presented by quiet roads to seek out the most exhilarating routes. Our New Year’s Resolutions Vicky Parrott: My 1992 Mercedes SL has regrettably seen insufficient use over the past year. As the wise Steve Cropley once advised, the true essence of car ownership lies in having a purpose and destination for your vehicle. This coming year, I plan a road trip with a fellow SL enthusiast and intend to take my nine-year-old daughter to the Goodwood Revival. My resolution is simple: create lasting memories. Matt Prior: I intend to transform my Land Rover Defender from a utilitarian workhorse into a more relaxed, soft-top weekend vehicle. With my Audi A2 now fulfilling the daily driver role, the Defender can embrace a less demanding, more recreational lifestyle. My aim is to use it less frequently, but undoubtedly, enjoy it more profoundly. Steve Cropley: In the coming year, I aim to drive as extensively as ever, but with a newfound emphasis on commencing journeys earlier in the day. Driving is particularly rewarding when traffic is sparse – a benefit that generally extends well into the day. The most reliable method to ensure this is to depart before the majority of drivers have begun their commutes. Illya Verpraet: I recognize the need to dedicate more time to my personal vehicle collection. A significant continental road trip, which I was unable to undertake this year, is long overdue. My recently acquired BMW E30 is currently undergoing winter servicing and will be instrumental in fulfilling this ambition, hopefully while also addressing numerous other minor mechanical needs.
James Disdale: I confess to making this declaration annually, but for 2026, I am genuinely resolute. After a decade of neglect and languishing beneath a cover, I am finally embarking on the resurrection of my Mk2 Volkswagen Golf GTI, which has been registered in my name since 2003. However, I anticipate delivering an identical statement this time next year…
